75 mi - The Death Ride w/B an John
B and I left at 5:30a to beat the heat.
John wasn't leaving until 6:00.
A very plesant spin and a little warmer than last weekend.
B an I arrived at the Coldbrook gate closure, I went right on through.
B was looking at the forest Service map of the area.
A CHP drove up, came over to him, and told him that no bicycles
were allowed past the gate.
The Patrolman proceded to hassle all other bicyclists that rode up.
John arrives at this time. Gets the same lecture...
John and B decide to ride down a ways and try to wait out the CHP.
The patrolman drives down, passes them, but stops and hangs a U, to watch up the
road.
B ducks out of sight, John kept riding down.
I was almost at Crystal lake by now.
The happenings by the gate, below, unbeknownst to me.
I was wondering what had happened? Where is everybody?
I got to the top-turnaround and waited 30 minutes, then 45.
Hummm somthing must have gone wrong down the way.
Better go see. I ride down about half a mile, and see B riding up.
I turned around and rode back to the top with him, and heard the story I
just related.
Jeeze, glad I missed that fiasco.
Anyway rested a while longer, then went down to
finish the Death Ride.
Stopped at Camp Williams Cafe for refreshments.
2 more hill climbs still left on the way back.
It was getting warmer, the climb up from East Fork wasn't to bad.
But, the last climb, Reward, the noon sun was cooking by
now, draining all energy out of ya.
I was determined. Home, food and a Birthday party were waiting.

me, Slow easy spin
Nobody showed up to ride today after yesterdays
Death Ride.
Paradise was Paradise. The road is still closed to motor
vehicles.
Saw no other bike riders.
Rode to the shed, turned around and was riding back about 1/4 mi on
GRR.
Was wondering if I'd see anything...
Shazam... Yogi shows up.
He was on the road and immediately went over the side.. I
stopped, it was silent.
If he was moving I'd hear him. Got off the bike and laid it down,
looked over the side. There he was. Started taking pictures of
him.
He growled at me. I growled back and waved my arms.
He left... whew!!

A Ghostly Sub 19: 2) Sunday July / 4 / 2010
77 mi - The Death Ride w/Edge,
Bryan, John
Rode a week early. Didn't want to miss the
closed to motor vehicles roads.
Will still ride next weekend on my B'day Sat. 10 July.
An absoultly Beautiful day.
Good temperture, good climb, good friends.
Saw some deer and some raven maniacs...
It was a perfect day, success for all.
Edge had a flat, a sharp rock through the sidewall.. Just past camp
Williams.
He repaired it without a boot, inflated the tire.
The tube exploded out the hole in the sidewall.
Try 2... Bryan showed him how to use a folded dollar bill to boot the
tire.
Good stuff, A successful repair.
Continued on the climb to Crystal, the decent, french fries at Camp
Williams.
Then the climb up from East Fork and the last climb up Reward and home.
6 hours of riding and climbing 7168' today.

YaHoo! A larger group today.
My friend John L from Steamboat Springs Colorado joined us for this
evenings MWF.
Saw a large Redtail Hawk or a brown eagle too... not sure which.
Also saw a couple of other riders on the ridge this evening.
Patrick from Upland, he rides up the Baldy road, then GRR, and down
GMR to Foothil and back to Upland.
An ambitious loop to say the least.
Speaking of ambitious loops we are planning on riding to Crystal lake
(Death Ride practice) on Sunday the 4th of July
and then the official Death Ride will be next week, on my B'day,
Saturday the 10th.
Should be good times.
Well be starting at the junction of the Baldy Road and GRR at 6:30
Sunday morning!!

Another great evening pedaling in Paradise.
Saw Matt and Ron about a mile and a half past the fork.
They turned around and rode back to the top of Monroe with edge and me.
We spotted a tarantula there, the creature got handled and examined
closely.
When we were getting ready to go,
Ron and Matt down GMR, and Edge an me back to Baldy.
Steve from Manhatten rode up GMR and was continueing toward Baldy.
He rode with Edge an me about half way back up Reward
before turning around to go back to Glendora.
It was nice meeting you Steve, come ride with us again.
A little while after Steve turned around,
Edge spotted a large Rattle snake beside the road.
Stopped to take pictures, this Pacific Rattler has 10 sections on his
rattle.
Must have been in stealth mode, he never made a sound.
Anyway great evening, Good ride, good climbing, good friends.

Saw a small Mountain King snake at the top of Reward.
Moved him off the road to the side.
Continued to the turnaround at the top of Monroe.
There we met Eric, Tim, and Big Chris.
Good meeting you. come ride the Ridge Road with us.
It was another perfect evening on the Ridge Road.
Very little traffic, good riding temperture. Good Friends, Good Ride.

Didn't have a lot of time to ride today.
So Bryan and I rode the ridge road.
Saw Annette and Matt in the Village before we left they had ridden up
GMR to GRR, and to the Baldy Village.
B and I rode out and I had a flat on the way down the reward climb.
Thats 3 for me, in less than 2 weeks.
Anyway rode the normal route, saw Matt and Annette again on their way
back.
A little while after that there was a procession of motorcycles with
LAPD escorts.
400+ motorcycles, it was the LAPD Newton Street Memorial
ride.
Quite a crowd on the ridge today.

Gotta be careful when approaching these deer when you are riding fast.

I hit one 20 years ago on this road..

A little hazy, but good climbing temp 65 degrees.
The ridge was busy, a few cars, motorcycles, and bike riders.
Lots of flowers in bloom, and Yucca plants.
Saw a another doe, she stayed around long enough to get her picture
taken.
Met Jason from Diamond Bar, he was climbing the ridge from Glendora
to Baldy.

Nice evening, a lot cooler than Saturday.
Got stung by a wasp, and had another flat tire, but Paradise is worth
it.
Turned around at the Shed.
On the way back found a flight feather that was 18 inches long and had
a 5/16" shaft...
This was from a large flying creature.. watch out...

After the Mt Baldy Pancake breakfast we rode down
the Mt Baldy road to Baseline. Baseline/Foothil to Glendora Mountain
Road up GMR to Glendora Ridge Road
and GRR back home to Baldy.
A lot of bike people and friends out on the road today.
Saw Ella when we turned on to Baseline in Claremont.
Then saw Anette and Matt coming down on GMR just past the first saddle.
Stopped talked with them and rested a bit before continuing back to
Baldy.
Nice seeing and talking with you.
The climbs home were hot today, ran out of water on the reward climb,
but a savoiur
drove by and asked if we needed water, Brian said "hell yes" he filled
our bottles..

they all called with excuses...
They missed another beautiful day in Paradise.
Did have a flat on the downhill portion of Reward.
A small sharp rock right near the 118 marker.
A little unnerving at 30+ mph and curves.
All went well, and I was back on the road in just a few minutes.
The quiet and solitude of the road today was good.
The pleasure was all mine.
Saw another deer, a young buck with velvet on his antlers.
Didn't get his picture, but anyway a good evening,

Rode from the Baldy Village out GRR to GMR.
There were 20+ people riding GRR to the Baldy village, most I've
seen.
Met Ruben from Long Beach Velo Allegro at the fork, nice meeting you,
come ride with us for the evening GRR MWF ride.
Continuing we went down the backside of GMR to East Fork
and over to hwy 39, Azusa cyn and down to Sierra Madre.
Sierra Madre/Foothill Blvd East to Claremont.
Watched B's son play baseball in Claremont.
Saved the best part of the ride for the end,
the Mt Baldy road to the Village, a 7 mi climb of 3100' , about 8.5%

Wow! What a adventure in Paradise this
evening was.
At 4:30 it looked like the storm wasn't going to do much.
Got ready to ride, looked at the temp it was 44 degrees.
Put on all the warmest stuff I could find... Thought I would be
overdressed.
Started riding, it was cold. At the top of reward (Ride
Highpoint) about 3.7 mi from
the village, the north side of the canyon was socking in and you
could see snow
flurries across the canyon
Started down Reward anyway, at the big turn 6 mi out it was
starting to hail..
But then at the bottom of reward at Peacock Saddle 7.5 mi it was
still sunny..
It was looking darker and darker on the reward climb back.
So we decided to turn around and ride back,
YaHooie Lighting and Thunder, very very frighting YOW!
And now it was real cold, dry, but hail/snowing.
It started getting dark and slippery with about 3/4 inch of hail/snow
on the road at the top of reward.
It stayed dry and frozen until the last mile back to the Village
where the junk on the road turned to slush and was wet.
It was 34 degrees when we got back.

Started at Vons in Claremont and headed east
toward Lytle Creek.
As we got closer to the 15 freeway, the 30 to 60 mph gusts were getting
brutal.
So we turned around and rode back toward Claremont.
We continued on Baseline to Leroys where I got a flat.
Fixed it and continued to Amelia in Glendora went south toward Bonelli
then east back to Coats Bicycle shop for a new tube and C02.
Then took a spin around Bonelli and back to Claremont.

Rode from Vons in Claremont south to the bicycle
trail where the old
Santa Fe RR tracks were. Followed the bike trail East best we could,
this bike trail has horrible continuity. It is easier to ride
with the traffic
along any of the east west streets. You are not constantly stopped by
curbs at every street crossing. Anyway went north at Helman then west
at Baseline and back to Vons.

Midwinter.
The archaeological site, The Stonehenge.
The primary axes of this monument is carefully aligned on
a
sight-line pointing to the winter solstice sunset.
The Great Trilithon was erected with its smooth flat face
turned towards the midwinter Sun.
The winter solstice was immensely important because
communities were not certain of living through the winter.
Starvation was common between January and April,
also known as the famine months.
The midwinter festival was the last feast celebration,
before deep winter began.
Most cattle were slaughtered so they would not have
to be fed during the winter.
The majority of wine and beer made during the year
was finally fermented and ready for drinking.

Warm Evening in Paradise. Rode out fast spin.
Saw the gang out at the shed, Kent, Cheryl, Annette, Matt, Ron, and James.
Took an easy spin back and some pictures.
Saw a large Tarantula crusing down the road.
Rode back slow enough that it was dark when I returned.
It had cooled off nicely.

A absoultly beautiful day in Paradise.
Rode from the Mt Baldy Village out GRR down the front of GMR to Glendora, Grand and the 10 freeway.
Reversed route and rode back.
Met Chris and Rob on the return up GMR and GRR to the MB village.
Chris rides with the Sho-Air juniors.
Nice meeting you. Come ride a MWF ride at Mt Baldy any time.

The weather was perfect! About 75 and blue sky in the middle of Aug.

Left from Mt Baldy earlier in the day and and will miss the GRR MWF.
Rode GRR, GMR, East Fork, SR39, to SGRT.
SGRT to Long Beach, and Coast Hwy to Huntington Beach.
