A fast spin up to LACO Fire Camp 9.
Rode a bunch of bicycle trails in Santa Clarita to Placerita Cyn.
Up Placerita Cyn Rd to Little T Cyn Rd, and Forest Route 3N17 to Camp 9.
LACO Fire Camp 9 is at 34.352983 -118.410333
There is a Nike Missile site here also.
Watched a Fire Helicopter land.
Then reversed Route and took Placerita Cyn Rd back to Newhall.
Beautiful, clear day with mild wind. Fun Stuff!

After a week of not riding, I was ready for some miles.
We rode from Vons Claremont out Baseline, Foothill
over to the beginning of the Rio Hondo Bike Trail.
Then down the RHBT and LART to Long Beach harbor.
Ate lunch in Belmont Shore, then continued to the SGRT.
Rode the SGRT up to Sierra Madre and back Foothill, Baseline to Claremont.
Crystal clear and warm, another great summer like day in January.

Rode from Vons Claremont Baseline, Foothill, and was on way up to Sierra Madre.
Where Ron experienced a mechanical failure.
His front derailleur cable broke.
So we detoured down to Grand and the I-210 the closest bike shop.
Got it fixed and continued back up to Sierra Madre & SR39, then to the SGRT.
Rode the SGRT until the repaving detour on Peck Rd.
Took surface streets over to the beginning of the  North Rio Hondo Trail,
the other side of the Whittier Narrows and another flood gate on this side.
Had a snack, turned around and retraced our route back to Claremont.
Nice day, good ride.

John and Eden rode the last 8 mi to the Beach with us.
Rested and snacked at Huntington then returned.
A fast spin we had favorable winds both down and on the return trip.

Rode from the shop on the bike trails to the Old Ridge Route.
Climbed the Ridge Route to Templin Hwy.
This is normally a long, but easy climb.
But today, due to some Wizard of OZ winds blowing down the pass,
it was a extreamely hard climb. A Ridge Riders delight...
Then on the way back down, with the winds help, it was a 55+ mph roller coaster ride.

Rode from Vons Claremont. Out Baseline/ Foothill/ Sierra Madre to SGRT.
SGRT to a little past Peck Rd in Pico Rivera.
The SGRT is closed here, they are repaving a section between
Peck rd and Whittier Narrows dam.
Turned around when the bike trail turned to dirt and returned.
Anyway it was a beautiful warm, 86 degree, crystal clear January day.
Rode back up the bike trail to The El Encanto turnoff, in Azusa Cyn
 then back down 39 to Sierra Madre.
Stopped at Pepe's Tacos for some lunch, yum, yum, yum..
Then continued back to Claremont.

Rode down the Baldy frontside... thats a free 9 miles of no pedaling.
Was planning on riding to the beach.  Got to Glendora and plans changed.
Called Matt and Annette to see if they were available to ride up GMR.
Annette was, after she got done working, and Matt was not.
So I rode to SR39 and stopped at Pepe's for Tacos. Yum!
Rode up 39 to the SGRT, then down and back around to Glendora.
Annette was almost done by then. Talked w/Bill while waiting. Nice meeting you Bill.
Rode up GMR w/ Annette, she went back at Priceless (nice view of the valley here).
I continued up GMR, GRR, to Baldy.
Beautiful Day.

Rode from the shop to Santa Susana area to climb Box and Black Cyn roads.
Climbed up Box cyn to Santa Susana Pass Rd, then climbed Black Cyn to the
 RocketDyne (Boeing) site.
And then down Woolsey Cyn and returned the same way we rode out.
'Sweet Jesus', Box and Black canyon roads are brutal...
Box Cyn is 3 miles of 9%... Then Black Cyn is 2 miles of 15 to 25%...
YOW! Be afraid.... Makes the Baldy Rd seem like kid stuff...

Rode down the Baldy Rd to Ron's in Upland.
Took Baseline/Foothill to GMR.
Then up GMR/GRR back to Baldy for me.
Ron got a flat at 40mph on the way down the Baldy road.
The steep fast part above the tunnels...
The tire came off the rim and the tube tangled in the brake, spokes, and quick disconnect.
The wheel stopped turning, and Ron kept it upright as he skidded to a stop.
YOW! Bad deal about the flat, good deal that he was able to kept it upright....

This was supposed to be the annual 150 mi ride,
But due to some changes it was 112 mi.
We left Newhall and went south through the Newhall Pass.
Down to Griffith Park and on to the LA River Trail.
Took the LART south to the intersetion on the Rio Hondo River Trail.
Took the RHRT north and exited near El Monte then north, up Santa Anita Ave
through Arcadia and then Baldwin Ave to Sierra Madre.
Ate Lunch at Lucky Baldwins Delirum Cafe in Sierra Madre.
Took Sierra Madre Blvd, New York Ave, and Foothill Blvd back to the Newhall Pass.
A Great ride, lots of fun and friends.
There was one minor crash..
Jorge got caught up crossing some RR tracks,
one spot of road rash, and a bent derailluer, all OK, he continued riding.

then took Imperial to Santiago Cyn.
Rode Santiago to Cooks Corner in Lake Forest.
Was planning on getting a bite to eat at Cooks Corner....
But.... there was close to 3000 motor cycle riders there...
They were having a 9-11 Memorial run from Cooks to Long Beach.
Found a less crowded place to eat in Lake Forest.
Flatted twice on the way down, both times from goats head thorns... Arghhh
Ride back to Corona was uneventful.
Anyway great day, great ride, good road.

Monday - The RTTT (Run To The Top) was canceled about an hour into the race.
The Forest and Sherrif's determined that there was too much lightning danger.
Anyway.... back to Sunday before...
I hiked up around 2:00p on Sunday 09/04/11 to spend the night on top.
It was a bit cloudy and a couple of  showers as I drove up to the top of lift #4.
Nothing horrible, it was stopped and clear at top of the ski lift.
The hike up to where I was going to camp was uneventful.
Saw some friends camping about 200 yards below where I was.
They set up a nice camp, although they had no tent.
I set up my spot, I use a solo biv tent, it has a rain, wind fly.
Everything in my camp was on and secure.
I hiked around the top and down to to the lift without the 40#  pack I had taken up.
30# was my stuff and 10# the Clocks and Radios for the run tomorrow.
It was a beautiful evening, good pictures, a couple of micro showers, all good.
There were both clouds and clear sky with stars, and a few more quick showers,
and some lightning somewhere north.
I turned in at 10:00p.
At 3:00am all hell broke loose... The sky opened with a loud crash.
A thunder, lightning, wind, rain storm, and temperatures of 40 degrees outside.
There was so much rain, lightning, and thunder. I wasn't going to stick my head out.
It was nice, dry and warm in the tent, although scary because of the lightning
striking all around.
I stayed awake, cooked coffee and breakfast in the tent.
There were several of these storms before 6:00am, and the lightning had stopped.
The rest of the RTTT crew was showing up about 6:45~7:00
By 7:00 it had cleared and we were ready for a race.
Made contact with the start crew and there was a successful 8:00am start.
The clocks were running.  Around 8:30 we heard that the race might be canceled.
At 9:00 before the first runners make the top, we got word that it was canceled,
and about 100 had started and were running before cancellation.
We, the top crew, decided to stay and time the few that would be at the top.
At 11:30, 200+ had finished, and were happy to get run times.
We got word to close it down, the sheriff had to sweep the hill.
BTW: there was no lightning or rain after 6:00a.

I do the timing on the Mt Baldy Run To The Top
I am Hiking up Mt Baldy on Sunday, around noon.
I spend the night at the top, wake to do the timing on Monday.
Then hike down Monday afternoon.
I've been doing this the past 20+ years.
This is another slice of the Paradise pie.

Lots of people and critters out on this beautiful evening in Paradise.
Saw 5 cyclist riding toward Baldy and cars with people cruising GRR.
Saw several deer, a few tarantulas,bats, lizards and a small snake.
The crack between the earth and the sky was spectacular this evening.
Clear blue and orange sky with light rain.
The Rainbow from the top of Mt San Antonio (Baldy).

Another one of those beautiful, quiet evenings in Paradise.
No cars on the road, but a lot of tarantulas out cruising, and a few bats.
Was sitting at the maint shed turnaround, and saw a couple of cyclists ride up GMR.
Greg and Shawn were riding up from Glendora.
It is getting dark by 7:30 now.
Every 5 minutes spent resting at the maint shed
is another mile of darkness at the end of the ride.
Good I had a light, the last 3 miles were in the dark.

Dropped a car off at Huntington Beach, then rode my bike home.
Got a late start, left Huntington at 4:15p
Rode up the San Gabriel River Trail.
Ate dinner at Pepe's Tacos @ 6:45 after getting off the bike trail.
Pepe's is at the 39 and Sierra Madre in Azusa, Yum good food.
Got to the Glendora Mountain Road in time for a moonlight ride home to Baldy.
Very little traffic on the ride up GMR/GRR.
Absolute Paradise.

Saw Matt on the Monroe climb, he was stopped looking at a rattle snake.
It was hidden in the bushes, but was buzzing like crazy the whole time we talked.
We continued up to the Maint shack, then back to the Monroe turnaround.
The climb up Reward this evening  was good.

Wow, quite an adventure in Paradise this evening.
It was 78 degrees and windy when I left the village.
Cloudy and a few drops of rain.
Felt good to ride. It was like this all the way to the maint shack on GMR.
There wasn't a soul or sound on the road.
Then on the way back... Thunder and lightning.. Very very frightening...
Yow, it started to rain hard now, big drops.
At the Peacock saddle, the beginning of the Reward Climb, was the most spectacular rainbow!
It continued to rain all the way up the Reward climb.
I was soaked to the core, but it felt good, still 75 degrees out.
Great climb, it was a Priceless Evening in Paradise.
July the 4th, a good light show, sunset and alpenglow, rainbows and all.

Watched the heli land on a very small turnout.

Absoulte stunning evening in Paradise.
Saw a 4.5 ft gopher snake near the top of Reward on the way out.
Just above Peacock Saddle a CHP stopped us going down, and on the way back up.
There was a film crew doing a car commercial. We have no idea what kind of car...
The CHP stopped us each way so the crew could cover the car before anybody went by..
Mystery car...
Anyway saw Matt and Ron at Monroe Saddle.. MIA was missing..
Couldn't talk Edge into riding down to Newmans, so we started our return there.
It was a fast spin back to the Village.

Rode from Corona to Lake Elsinore.
Then up the Ortega Hwy to the Lookout Road House.
An adventure!
There are a lot of glass monsters in Corona. I got a flat 3 mi into the ride.
We rode on Temescal Canyon rd to Elsinore.
Alan was trying to dodge a marker in the road 22 miles out and swerved and went down.
Yow! Road Rash... Ouch!
He was OK, as was his bike, so we continued after a short stop.
Anyway the Ortega Hwy is a good climb, and lots of fast traffic...
With no sholder, be careful here.
The Lookout Road House is a great place to stop for lunch. 
Good food, good service.
The trip back was eventful also, Alan had a flat on the Ortega Hwy.
And it was over 100 degrees on the way back to Corona.

Got tacos for lunch, but then could not find B... ?
Looked around in the usual places we eat... still didn't see him.
So I started riding back.... Made B chase me for his lunch..
He caught up with me about 5 miles up GMR,
complaining that he had been chasing me the last 10 miles...
I said it couldn't have been a fast chase as I had stopped several times...
to eat a taco or 4 along the way.
Anyway the rest of the ride was good, as were the rest of the tacos.

3 others had said that they were going to ride tonite... Only regrets for them.
Paradise was an adventure this day after solstice evening.
Saw 2 rattle snakes, one was having a squirrel for dinner.
The other just crossing the road.
Then after turning around, and on the way back up saw pappa bear.
He was cruising up the road before Newmans Point.
I had to pedal faster to keep up with him.
Saw a Gopher snake, and then 4 deer near the Baldy Village.

Santa Clarita /Balcom Cyn KOM / Thousand Oaks
I rode from Westlake and intercepted the TOC at the Balcom cyn KOM.
Followed the entourage back to Thousand Oaks and watched the laps around T.O.
Enjoyed the festivities

Ahh... Friday the 13th.
A great day/ Good ride.
Rode from Corona to Perris and back to Corona.
Going out went around the north side of Lake Matthews.
Coming back went around the South side of Matthews.

Empty, quiet road.. no cars or motorcycles.
Saw only 3 bicycle riders... all regulars.
Saw Edge and Tom from the Village, they went out at 3:30
and were on their way back, and saw Matt at the Monroe Saddle.
Rode with him the the maint shed.
It was a beautiful evening in Paradise

A Beautiful Memorial Day.
Perfect Weather, perfect temp.
Lots of wild flowers in Bloom.
A lot of bicycle riders and motorcycles today.
Not too many cars.
This ride has almost a 3000 elevation gain on the return to Baldy.

Wow!, the wild flowers are in full bloom in Paradise.
Saw an early Tarantula walking the road.
There was a bit af traffic for a Friday.
Saw several bike riders, motorcycles and autos.
Met George V from Newport beach on the road at Monroe.
He was riding up GMR and down the backside to Camp Williams.
Then going back up from Williams to GRR and on to the Village and up to Baldy ski lifts.
An ambitious ride for late in the day.
Paradise was good this evening.
